Gran Canaria

Overview

Great beaches with all types of water sports are on offer in Gran Canaria, and on land the fun continues in Gran Canaria's numerous leisure parks and sporting venues, all taking place under Gran Canaria's many hours of sunlight. Nightlife is also good, drawing many thousands of holiday-makers to Gran Canaria's shores.

Today, tourism is Gran Canaria's major wealth-earner, with over 11 million holiday-makers visiting Gran Canaria every year.

The southern part of Gran Canaria is where most of the popular beaches and nightlife are located. By contrast, the north of Gran Canaria concentrates on the corporate sector, with Las Palmas and Puerto de la Luz leading the way.

Gran Canaria also provides ample scope for more adventurous holiday-makers to get off the beaten track, with rural tourism becoming increasingly popular.

Weather

Constant warm temperatures and plentiful sunshine make Gran Canaria one of the most popular of Europe's holiday destinations. Average summer temperatures are between 26°C and 28°C; in the winter, the temperature in Gran Canaria hovers around the high teens. The reason for Gran Canaria's clement weather is due to the trade winds which prevail all year, the proximity of the Gulf Stream, and to Gran Canaria's latitude.

However, it is occasionally possible to see snow on Gran Canaria's highest peaks, situated in the centre of Gran Canaria.

Main resorts & attractions

Gran Canaria's largest holiday resort is Playa del Ingles, an ideal resort for groups or for couples looking for night-time action after a lazy day on Gran Canaria's beaches.

Puerto Rico - a specially-constructed holiday resort located on Gran Canaria's south west coast.

Maspalamas is on the South East coast of Gran Canaria. Maspalamas is most famous for its sand dunes and its 6kms of appealing Gran Canaries beach. While you're on the sand, why not take a camel ride, one of Gran Canaria's more unusual attractions! Close to Maspalamas is the Faro lighthouse, located at the most southern point of Europe. For kids of all ages visiting Gran Canaria, Maspalamas offers the Aqua Sur water park with safe slides, pools and water rides.

If you've chosen Gran Canaria for a relaxing holiday, then Sonnenland is the choice for you. However, whenever you want to pick up the pace a bit, it's only a short drive to Gran Canaria's more lively resort at Playa del Ingles.
