Tenerife

Overview

Known as the ‘Island of Eternal Spring', Tenerife is located just off Africa's north-western shore with its capital in Santa Cruz. Popular as a holiday destination with British holiday makers, Tenerife is the largest of Spain's seven Canary Islands, catering for a wide range of tastes and holiday requirements.

Tenerife's landscape is very diverse: the south of Tenerife being desert-like, with black-sand beaches, whilst Tenerife's north is green and subtropical.

In the centre of Tenerife stands Mount Teide, a volcano rising to a height of just over 3,7000m, the highest point in the whole of Spain.

Weather

Although a small island, the weather on Tenerife varies according to your location. This is primarily due to the Trade Winds in combination with Gulf air currents that blow on Tenerife. The south and west sides of the island are the warmest, whilst El Teide, Tenerife's mountain-volcano, is under snow for 3 months of the year.

Famous for the smallest difference between lowest and highest temperatures, Tenerife averages 15°C in the winter and 24°C in summer. There is no rainy season as such on Tenerife, however, there are occasional showers between the months of November and March.

Main resorts & attractions

Whatever the time of year, it's always warm enough in Tenerife to go to the beach. Puerto de la Cruz is Tenerife's top resort and indeed one of the top resorts in the Canary Islands. Tenerife's south east corner is the main spot for beaches of fine gold sand - Playa de las Americas and Los Christianos are the favourite of regular visitors to Tenerife. Further to Tenerife's north is Teresitas Beach whilst Tenerife's east coast plays host to many black sand volcanic beaches, for example Playa de El Puertito and Playa del Roque.

Wind surfing enthusiasts on Tenerife make for El Medano whilst surfers flock to La Troya, Conquistador or Las Galletas.

Off Tenerife's beaches why not visit the Octopus Aquapark in Playa de las Americas. Or alternatively, take one of Tenerife's whale and dolphin cruises, perhaps passing Tenerife's spectacular Los Gigantes cliffs on the way.

Visit also Tenerife's Teide National Park, with the massive Teide Volcano at its centre. On another day, make time for Tenerife's Loro Parque, once just a parrot park, these days it has grown into Tenerife's second largest tourist draw after Mount Teide with the addition of sea-lions, dolphins, sharks and penguins as well as other aquatic creatures in addition to land animals such as gorillas, tigers, flamingos and other animals.

Tenerife's former capital is Laguna but today it remains Tenerife's cultural and religious capital. Due to it position in Tenerife's history, Laguna can boast buildings of notable architectural worth such as churches, palaces and traditional Tenerife houses dating from the 17th century.
